general information

Black pepper is a perennial woody vine native to South India and Sri Lanka. Black pepper can reach a height of up to 10 meters. When ripening, peppercorns turn yellowish-red and contain one seed.

To make black pepper, peas are boiled until they darken to a brown/black color, dried in the sun, and ground into a powder. White pepper is made by removing the dark outer pericarp of the pepper pea, which gives it a milder flavor.

Black pepper is one of the oldest known spices and is widely cultivated in tropical regions of Southeast Asia for culinary purposes. The spice black pepper was an important item of trade between India and Europe and even served as a form of currency; in ancient Greece and Rome, tribute was paid in pepper.

Black pepper has been used in traditional medicine to relieve colds, pain, rheumatism, flu, muscle aches, exhaustion, and fever. Black pepper has been used as a nervine tonic, circulatory stimulant, and digestive to stimulate appetite, increase saliva production, and promote peristalsis. Black pepper is often combined with ginger in Ayurvedic remedies to improve digestive health.
