Frankincense: Smoke or Essential Oil?
Frankincense has accompanied humanity for thousands of years. It has been used in religious ceremonies, meditation, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Ayurveda. Historically, however, people did not use frankincense essential oil—they used the hardened resin of Boswellia trees.
Why resin? Because it served two important purposes.
The first was spiritual. The fragrant smoke created a sacred atmosphere, helping people focus, quiet the mind, and prepare for prayer or meditation.
The second was practical. Long before modern sanitation existed, burning frankincense resin was one of the few available methods of purifying indoor air during epidemics.
Today, however, we understand much more about the chemistry of frankincense. This knowledge explains why the resin and the essential oil work in fundamentally different ways.
Natural Boswellia resin consists of three major components:
- 5–10% essential oil (volatile mono- and sesquiterpenes);
- 20–30% water-soluble polysaccharides;
- 60–70% resin acids and resins, including the particularly valuable compound incensole acetate.
When resin is placed on hot charcoal, it does not simply warm up. It undergoes pyrolysis—a process of thermal decomposition that significantly alters its chemical composition.
It is during this process that incensole acetate is released, a compound that has attracted considerable scientific interest.
A study by Moussaieff et al. (2008) demonstrated that incensole acetate activates TRPV3 ion channels in the brain, a mechanism associated with anxiolytic and calming effects.
However, alongside beneficial compounds, combustion also produces unwanted by-products.
At temperatures above 300°C (572°F), the following substances are released into the air:
- PM2.5 fine particulate matter;
- carbon monoxide;
- acrolein;
- polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (including benzo[a]pyrene).
This is why smoke may irritate the respiratory tract, particularly in people with asthma or other lung conditions.
In addition, some of the most delicate monoterpenes, such as α-pinene and limonene, are destroyed by high temperatures.
How Is the Essential Oil Different?
Frankincense essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the resin. Only the volatile aromatic molecules are extracted, while the heavier resinous components remain behind.
When diffused using an ultrasonic diffuser or a nebulizer, the oil works through an entirely different mechanism.
Cold diffusion produces no combustion by-products, no soot, and no carbon monoxide. Instead, it creates a clean aromatic aerosol composed of microscopic droplets of essential oil.
These monoterpenes rapidly interact with the olfactory system and are partially absorbed into the bloodstream through the lungs, producing a gentle aromatherapeutic effect.
French clinical aromatherapists, including Pierre Franchomme and Dominique Baudoux, regard cold diffusion of frankincense as a valuable tool in aerophytotherapy.
They emphasize its high concentration of monoterpenes, which may help support respiratory health and are commonly incorporated into preventive respiratory wellness practices.
Representatives of the English school of aromatherapy, including Robert Tisserand and Jane Buckle, place greater emphasis on safety and psycho-emotional well-being.
In their view, diffusing frankincense essential oil may gently shift the nervous system toward parasympathetic activity, encourage deeper breathing, and help reduce stress without exposing the respiratory tract to the irritation associated with smoke.

At Aroma Fields, we don't see frankincense resin and frankincense essential oil as competing alternatives. They simply serve different purposes.
If your goal is meditation, breathwork, pranayama, or body-oriented therapeutic practices, we recommend choosing the essential oil.
During deep diaphragmatic breathing, the lungs work more intensively, making it especially important to inhale a clean aromatic aerosol free from combustion products. Frankincense essential oil is also naturally rich in α-pinene, a monoterpene that has demonstrated properties in scientific studies suggesting it may support bronchial relaxation and comfortable breathing.
If, however, your intention is to perform a symbolic space-cleansing ritual, the resin remains the most authentic choice.
Across many cultures, burning frankincense resin has symbolized the end of one chapter and the beginning of another—after illness, relocation, an important life event, or a difficult personal period. The smoke creates a powerful sensory experience that helps mark the transition between what was and what comes next.
Even in this context, safety remains essential. Resin should only be burned in a well-ventilated space, and smoke should never be inhaled directly.
Our recommendation is simple: use frankincense resin for ritual and symbolic space cleansing, and choose frankincense essential oil for breathing practices, meditation, and everyday aromatherapy.
